The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is a 501(C)(3) non-profit association that is owned and managed by its members. The organization is dedicated to the academic and professional success of African-American engineering students and professionals. NSBE offers its members scholarships, leadership training, professional development, mentoring opportunities, career placement services and more! NSBE is comprised of more than 250 collegiate, 68 professional and 100 pre-collegiate active chapters nationwide and overseas. The Montgomery based Central-Alabama NSBE, Jr. (CA-NSBE, Jr.) chapter which focuses on the academic enrichment of K-12th grade students in the Tri-County area, is one of said 100.

The CA-NSBE, Jr. is led by Ms. Sonja B. Favors, senior environmental engineering specialist with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. Ms. Favors and her colleagues are dedicated to stimulating youth interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, or STEM. The goal is to encourage students in grades K–12 to attend college and pursue technical degrees. The CA-NSBE, Jr. Program provides activities to help students discover firsthand how engineering and technology relate to the world around them and discover the excitement of academic excellence, leadership, technical development and teamwork.

The August 6th event is a sample of the fun we have all year long and we hope to recruit and engage even more students from the tri-county area.

MACBETH in Shakespeare Garden Featuring ASF’s Professional Intern Acting Company

May 2 at 2pm

A special fundraiser to benefit the Alabama Shakespeare Festival’s renowned Shakespeare Garden and the theatre’s Intern Company will take place in the garden on Monday, May 2 at 7 p.m. The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of an hour-long version of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Gates to the garden open at 6 p.m. with music, food and cash bar. ASF staff and several resident artists will be in attendance. The Intern Company, resident artists and guests will mingle with the crowd after the show.

Tickets for this benefit are $20 for adults and $10 for children 16 and under. They may be obtained through the ASF Box Office, on line at www.asf.net or by calling 800.841.4273. Tickets will also be available at the door on the night of the event.

The primary purpose of the fundraiser is to replace aging benches in the beautiful garden. The benches cost approximately $500 a piece. Ultimately, ASF would like to replace all 16 benches.

“Our master gardener, Karen Weber, asked if we could do anything to replace the old benches,” said ASF’s chief operating officer Michael Vigilant. “Our team thought a public showcase performance by our talented actors in the garden would be a great opportunity. For all of those folks who enjoy the grounds, participation in this event is a wonderful way to give back.”

ASF’s versatile and talented intern company has performed in this season’s Peter Pan, Much Ado About Nothing, Julius Caesar and House at Pooh Corner. They also toured this one-hour production of Macbeth to schools across the state. In May, they will return to New York City to continue their theatrical careers. The Intern Company consists of Kevin Callaghan, Erik Gullberg, Tara L. Herwig, Tyler Jakes, Caitlin McGee, Seth D. Rabinowitz and Corey Triplett.

In case of rain, the event will take place in the Octagon theatre at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.
