News Days

For our younger viewers, it is worth noting that, from 1953 until 1986, WCOV-TV operated a local News Department and produced newscasts each weekday. Our news operations and facilities played a large part in the CBS Network's civil rights coverage during the 1960s. We also produced several weekly news-related programs and special reports. We hope that you will enjoy the reminiscences of some of our former news personnel.

  • I will always remember starting at WCOV-TV in 1979, hauling a 16 mm camera, sound box, tripod, light kit, extra film mag all by myself and trying to get into the door of the Whitley Hotel. A stooped, elderly man opened the door for me, and I thanked him. "You're taking a man's job" he told me. I didn't see a man carrying any of that equipment!

  • I attended the 1980 TV Photographer course at Oklahoma State put on by Kodak. I loved shooting my own film and was sorry when we switched to ENG and I couldn't shoot anymore.

  • My very first story reporting and shooting was covering Lillian Carter at Huntington in 1979 by myself and I left the orange outside filter on...orange Lillian! Thankfully I didn't get fired!

  • I went on from WCOV-TV in 1982 to teach journalism at Ohio State University while getting my Master's in Journalism, back to WCOV-TV for a few months fall 1983 before I married John Hood in January 1984.

  • Then on to Maryland Public Television where I was an assistant producer for ON STAGE AT WOLF TRAP, a performance series, along with a Maryland Educational TV project.

  • We moved to New Mexico in 1986 and I taught Journalism at New Mexico State University and became news director of KRWG-TV, the University owned PBS station. We moved to Huntsville in 1990 and I worked for CBS affiliate WHNT-TV behinds the scenes in the newsroom until I "retired" to have son Alex in 1991, and daughter Kate in 1992.

  • Now I am community relations director for our kid's school, Westminster Christian Academy. I've done free lance writing for local Huntsville papers for 15 years. I do miss TV and fondly remember my times at WCOV-TV..
